Club Supports Health Care In Africa
| Former Rotary president Mike
Davies, a motor cycling enthusiast, was impressed when someone from the charity Riders for
Health gave a talk to the Letchworth club. So much so that he decided to donate £500 from his presidential fund raised through the clubs annual sponsored walk to help the organisation continue its work in Africa. Mike, whose year of office as president of the Letchworth Garden City Rotary Club ended in July, is the proud owner of a 900cc Triumph Thunderbird. He said: The charitys work with motor cycles sparked my interest. There is no transport infrastructure in many parts of Africa and people are dying through want of healthcare. Riders are doing a marvellous job in providing reliable transport for health workers. The charity maintains a fleet of over 500 motor bikes and four-wheel drive vehicles in Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Gambia, Ghana, Malawi and Lesotho. Martyn Cook, Riders operations manager, who received the cheque on the charitys behalf, said one in 14 women in Africa die during childbirth because there is no medical help available. There is so much more we can do and donations like this are vital. All the vehicles we maintain are used by health workers, who provide medical care for around 10 million people every year. Without a reliable support network, this work would be impossible, he said. September 8, 2003 |
