Local schools were invited to undertake their own projects linked to Tree Aid.

In the twentieth century Africa has endured a host of severe problems ranging from drought and famine, to political unrest and civil war. No region has been more adversely affected than the SAHEL - the semi-arid region which runs across Africa, at the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, from Senegal in the west to the Red Sea in the East

In this region in particular, trees are essential for survival, providing food, fuelwood, medicines, animal fodder, building materials, tools, furniture, shade and shelter for farmland so crops can be grown.
