MANOR WOOD AND PICNIC HAY MEADOW (1)
| The wood and
meadow at Willian were planned by the Rotary Club of Letchworth Garden
City to provide an area of accessible woodland in the town and to raise
money for Tree Aid to fund a community forest and wildlife conservation
project in Ethiopia. Schools, clubs and families paid to plant trees on
the site on land owned by Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation.
After the planting of 1,200 trees in December 1993, Manor Wood Conservation Volunteers was formed to help nurture the site to encourage wildlife and and to enhance the use of the area which is the start of a number of circular walks. |

Good quality hay is taken from the site in July, enough to provide feed for the two horses owned by members of the volunteers. The long term aim is to sow native wild flowers into the meadow. More recently the club and the volunteers have worked with the Inner Wheel Club to plant bluebells and native daffodils in a section of the wood. The photographs trace some of the stages in the development of Manor Wood. |
