PARAMEDICS AT THE READY!

Ready for action...Clive Madley is pictured in the new emergency response vehicle with Colin Reid (centre) and Tim Jeeves, the incoming president.

First-aiders were standing by when Letchworth Garden City Rotary Club president Colin Reid handed over his chain of office in June.

But the St. John Ambulance team were not there to give timely medical assistance to his successor, Tim Jeeves, who was faced with the rigours of taking office - far from it.

Clive Madley, officer-in-charge for Letchworth, had brought along the division's new emergency response vehicle to show club members who had donated £1,000 towards its purchase.

The event was the club's annual 'handover' meeting which was held at St. Christopher School, Letchworth.

Said Clive: "It took two years to raise the £21,000 needed to buy the vehicle, but it was worth the wait. We are very grateful for the club's donation."

Guest speaker at the handover was Laura Maclehose, of the World Health Organisation programme at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who brought the club up to date on the worldwide campaign to eradicate polio - another Rotary-supported venture.

Members were also treated to a singing concert by students and staff from the music department at the school.
