CHARITY WALK – IN AUSTRALIA
Foot and Mouth may have scuppered plans for the ‘Garden City 15’ charity walk this year but news reaches us of a ‘Round The City Walk’ organised along the same lines in Australia!
Some months ago we received a letter from the Rotary Club of South Launceston, in Tasmania, Australia, asking if we could help them to organise a similar walk to our own.
Their club president had apparently seen a news item about our walk on the website while on a family visit to Scotland.
Club member Jim Morley, the club’s veteran walk organiser, duly sent off a package of information and complimentary material.
Recently Jim received a letter from the President of the Launceston Club, David Lindsay, to say the walk – covering 12.5 miles through parkland and streets – had been held in April.
Although not as well supported as they had hoped, about 50 people took part and raised more than $2,000 for charity.
Undaunted, the Launceston club is now making plans for a second walk in the Spring and is busily trying to ‘sell’ the idea to local organisations.
Said Jim: “Their request came right out of the blue and I was only too pleased to help them. I am delighted they managed to organise a walk and I am sure it will grow in popularity as the years go on. It is nice to know there was at least one charity walk based on the Letchworth formula this year!”
